Helderberg Reformed Church is deeply rooted in a long, faithful history of worshiping and serving the Lord. Our longest-tenured living member joined the church in 1955, and our newest members include three teenagers who joined in 2025. For some of these young members, this congregation is already part of a multigenerational faith story: their parent(s) and grandparent(s) grew up in the church, and they have attended since infancy.

Fundraising adventures

Our members look back fondly on the many fundraisers that have brought our congregation together over the years. The longest-running and perhaps most memorable of these was our annual turkey dinner, featuring an entirely homemade meal. From the turkeys and potatoes to the pies, members devoted the week before the dinner to preparing every part of the feast.

Members prepared turkeys and pies at home and delivered them to the church that morning. The day before, church members gathered to peel potatoes and arrange the tables, chairs, and place settings. On the day itself, members took on every role needed to welcome and serve our guests: cooking, waiting tables, washing dishes, and collecting payments. Several seatings were held throughout the afternoon and evening. After the final seating, the church members would finally sit down together to enjoy their own turkey dinner before cleaning up and putting away the tables and chairs. These dinners hold cherished memories, and we miss them greatly.

Our Pastor

In 2022, while searching for a new pastor, Helderberg Reformed Church was fortunate to begin sharing Rev. Matthew van Maastricht with Altamont Reformed Church. At the time, this shared-pastor arrangement was still relatively new, though it has become more common in recent years. Under this arrangement, the pastor leads worship at one church and then travels to the other church to lead its service. The two congregations share pastoral expenses while remaining separate in most other ways.

This partnership worked very well for both congregations. It also revealed meaningful opportunities for fellowship and shared ministry, including weekly Bible studies and summer worship services together. Although both churches are now searching for a new pastor, we hope to continue this successful sharing arrangement with the next pastor.
